Athletes have national championships in sights

The 2019 champions roll call for BMet’s sport students is set to be jam-packed as a number of athletes and sports teams have qualified for the Association of Colleges Sport (AoC) National Championships.

Students based across Birmingham and the Black Country will compete for medals in Ability Counts football, golf and table tennis among others.

Leading the charge are defending national champions, the Ability Counts football team. The team went unbeaten during the regional tournament, scoring 22 goals and conceding just 1.

Joining them is rising tennis star, Zak Buchli-Sagoo who also won all six of his regional tournament matches.

The 17-year-old from Sutton Coldfield said: “Naturally I wanted 2019 to be about me getting as many match wins as possible. I’m hoping to start competing at international level so with these championships coming up, I’ve got something to work towards and consolidate on during the rest of the season.”

Returning to the national championships for a third consecutive year is the women’s basketball team. Team captain, Sandra Hewakowska said: “Our consistent success at a regional level is something we’re all really proud of –now it’s time for us to capture that national title. I’m keen to make this happen, both as team player and coach.”

Jason Allen, Department Manager at the college is full of praise for the athletes. “Our students always give it their all when they’re at this tournament – this year will be no different. There are landmark achievements and milestones coming up along with continuing success stories. This means that once again, our end of season champions’ roll call is going to be exceptional.”

BMet sport students are continuing to participate in other national and regional tournaments over the coming season.
