BMet finance manager rewarded nationally during the pandemic

The hard work and positive achievements of BMet’s interim payroll manager has led to national recognition by a leading global recruitment agency.

Samantha Lancaster was nominated for the Payroller of the Year award by Hays Recruitment Agency and was one of only four people to be chosen as a highly commended winner.

The leading agency held its annual “Celebrate National Payroll Week” during National Payroll week – which is an opportunity to honour the amazing work done by payrollers across the UK.

Among other things, Samantha was nominated for the award due to her resilience and ability to effectively manage her finance team – all whilst working from home since April, due to Covid-19.

The new boss has stepped up from her role as a senior payroll administrator which she has performed effectively for seven years, to her current maternity cover managerial position.

Speaking of being shortlisted, Samantha said: “Stepping up into the manager’s position and taking responsibility of a fantastic team was a rewarding challenge. As well as home-schooling which was a new and slightly daunting situation, I was also faced with the challenge of training up a new employee remotely.

“Being organised has been a key factor in submitting our claims accurately. Thankfully, the team proved that we can pull together and still provide an excellent service to the college! The phrase “no two days are the same” has never seemed truer and I feel humbled to receive such national recognition!”

BMet’s payroll team are continually working hard every month to make sure that its employees are paid accurately and on time. A lot of effort has gone into the working from home payments, alongside processing the normal monthly payrolls and end of year submissions.

Fiona Yardley, the director of finance at BMet, who nominated Samantha for the national payroll award, said: “Samantha manages a payroll of around 800 employees and has demonstrated complete control in always hitting payroll deadlines and dealing with any challenges. She has also played a vital role in looking for ways to improve our financial service to both our internal and external customers.

“Her accolade is testament to how well she works with her team, it is well deserved, and we are all so very happy for her. She really is an asset to the BMet finance team!”

Helen Livesey, Senior Business Director at Hays, presented Samantha with her award in early October.  She said:  The calibre of the nominations this year was outstanding. It was so lovely to read all the comments, which really demonstrated what a wonderful profession the payroll world is.

“Sam thoroughly deserved her award and I was over the moon to present her with a certificate and a box of chocolates in person.”
