BMet student wins Apprentice of the Year at national food standards awards
A Level 3 higher education student has been crowned as Apprentice of the Year at a highly respected national industry-standard food awards ceremony.
Stephanie Williams, who is studying a Level 3 Multi-skilled maintenance engineering apprenticeship in food and drink at BMet, won Food Manufacture Apprentice of the Year at the Food Manufacture Excellence Awards.
The prestigious event took place on February 13 at the London Grosvenor House Hotel.
Stephanie impressed judges and beat off stiff competition from highly skilled apprentices from internationally recognised companies like Coca-Cola, Premier Foods and Weetabix.
Speaking of her excitement at winning the award, Stephanie said:
“I feel very grateful and happy to have won the award. It puts a great emphasis on how well the Tulip engineering apprenticeship is going, not just for me but also for my fellow apprentices.
“It means a lot to me to win the award. However, without my colleagues helping me every day, I never would have won it, so I am extremely thankful to them also.”
BMet has a long-standing relationship with Tulip Westerleigh, based in Bristol, and because of the partnership many apprentices have launched their career.
Stephanie began her four year-long apprenticeship at BMet in September 2016. She attends James Watt College, part of BMet, three times a year for six- week blocks, studying various modules including maintenance, electrical, welding, turning, milling and PLC programming.
Her day-to-day responsibilities, at BMet’s business partner Tulip Westerleigh, include answering to machinery breakdowns during production hours and completing various work orders between breakdowns, to keep the factory running efficiently.
