Busy season start for golfer, Jack
Golfer and Stourbridge College student, Jack Severn is on a high after achieving great results in two tournaments. The 17-year-old won the Worcestershire County Golf under 18s tournament in the summer and was runner-up in the Midland Golf Union Junior Champion of Champions event last weekend (9 September).
He is now aiming for success at two more high profile competitions – the England Golf Boys’ County Champion of Champions tournament this weekend (15 September) and the Junior European Open qualifiers in November.
“I feel this is my time to achieve the best possible results I can as a junior golfer then break into the adult tour,” said the Brierley Hill student. “There’s a lot of room for improvement but I’m looking forward to these next tournaments – they’re an opportunity to compete against the best of the best.”
Stourbridge College’s golf academy programme is delivered in partnership with the Midland College of Golf.
Jack who currently trains at Cleobury Mortimer Club believes his improved performance is down to the Level 3 sports diploma he has been studying.
“This is the first time I’ve made the effort to improve my fitness and physical development,” he explained. “Training with other students in the gym has been a big help to my performance.
“Studying anatomy and physiology has helped too. I know more about protecting myself from injuries such as repetitive strain. I’ve definitely come out on the golf course a much better player.”
Instinct is the other factor that Jack is making better use of.
“You’re never on the same course from one day to the next and even a slight change to the weather can throw your game off balance,” he said. “It’s down to each golfer to manage that by quickly working out the best way to play to their strengths. If you aren’t able to play to how you want to, you can’t get frustrated. You have to take control of whatever’s going on out there.”
It’s this approach that Jack hopes will help him consolidate on his 2017 season where he achieved fourth place in the Junior European Open in Spain and qualified for the BSC (British Schools and Colleges) Golf National Finals at Trevose.
“I want to retain my county title and improve on my tournament performances,” he added. “It’s important I make a good impression on any recruiters and representatives from the Professional Golf Association who are at these events as I want the opportunity to head to one of their colleges in America next year.
“And going through to the Junior European Open qualifiers is something I’ve spent my entire life working towards so I want to give this my best shot as well.”
The England Golf Boys’ County Champion of Champions tournament takes place at the home of England golf, Woodhall Spa in Lincolnshire while the Junior European Open qualifiers are in Andalucia, Spain.
