Change course with an Apprenticeship

The college currently has over 100 exciting vacancies available with employers across Birmingham and the wider area.

Alaco Millard, Director of Business Development at the college said: “The Christmas and New Year period is when many students question whether they have chosen the right course, sixth form or university. Some take the decision to drop out of their studies without being sure of what to do next. We want to say to these people that Apprenticeships are a fantastic way to change course for the better and get your qualifications and improve your chances to get your dream job.

“You can study a similar course and gain qualifications while picking up valuable work experience, or do something completely different. BMet will help you find something you love doing and where you can thrive.”

To help the process along, BMet is holding anApprenticeship Futures Eventsat James Watt College, Matthew Boulton College and Sutton Coldfield College this Saturday (16 January) between 10.30am and 1pm.

“Our event is an opportunity for those thinking about a new direction to speak to staff and apprentices about how Apprenticeship programmes work,”continued Alaco Millard. “If you bring your CV along with you, we can also match you to one of our current vacancies or help you prepare your resume for the future.”

Jody Taylor is just one student whose career went from strength to strength after she changed course. The 20-year-old was studying a Level 2 hairdressing qualification at James Watt College when she realised she preferred being in the workplace. After transferring to an Advanced Apprenticeship in Hairdressing with Bijou Hair in Sutton Coldfield she was recruited by spa operators, Steiner, who provide on board spa and beauty services to luxury cruise ships

“I wouldn't have got my job with Steiner if it wasn’t for the training I’d gained as an apprentice and my college qualification,”said Jody. “I've always been an outgoing person, which is why I preferred being in a salon with clients to gaining skills on a full-time course. And now it feels exciting to be doing something so different to everything I've done before now.”
