Former-student reflects on creating artwork for BMet

The illustration was digitally hand drawn by Ian and reflects the life of a college student and the various courses offered across BMet.

Speaking of the pride he felt to have his work chosen by the college, he said: “I’m really honoured that my work is displayed at the place where I studied at. It creates a good example to students that with dedication and a willingness to learn, you can leave college with some fantastic skills.”

BMet requested the illustration after seeing some of Ian’s freelance work at the college’s design studios at Millennium Point.

Ian, who completed HND graphics at Matthew Boulton College, is now studying illustration at Birmingham City University and plans to do his master’s degree following his graduation.

He currently works at a printing company in Birmingham but hopes to go into teaching in the future.

He said “I am really passionate about taking what I have learnt, and what I am still to learn and applying that to teach and inspire others.”

Ian specialises in storytelling and humour using a bold, quirky style and bright, vibrant colour palette. You see more of his work on his website.

The artwork sits inside the Costa Coffee on the first floor of Matthew Boulton College located in the city centre.

BMet’s art and design courses are accredited by the prestigious University of the Arts London Awarding Body and offer students the opportunity to work on live projects for real clients, offering genuine industry experience and a portfolio of work to show to potential employers.
