Lights, camera, zombie action

The art and design (theatre arts) students provided make-up for actors starring in Still and also took on roles as extras.

The film which was shot in Golden Square, the Jewellery Quarter’s newest development involved 30 students on the first and second year of their courses.

“This was an amazing work experience opportunity for our students,”said the College’s Lecturer, Emma Buet. “They worked with and were guided by the film’s chief prosthetics artist to create grisly-looking face and body make-up. They also created grisly designs of their own.

“To be at the centre of a live production with a strict filming schedule really benefited their professional development.”

Still is the story of a statue that comes to life and finds itself caught in the midst of a zombie apocalypse. It stars Birmingham-born actor, Joe Capella and is written and directed by Carl Timms, director at local digital media company, Made Media.

“I'm delighted to have worked with the students of BMet,” said Carl. “I'd been impressed with their portfolio work and enthusiasm for the subject, so was pleased this proved to be such a great learning opportunity for them.”

Prosthetics artist, Stuart Conran from Stourbridge provided the film’s special effects and prosthetics expertise having worked on many zombie flicks including Shaun of the Dead.

Emma Buet added: “Following our involvement in the charity event, Zombie Walk Birmingham 2015, where students did the make up for some of the fundraisers, we were invited to work on this film. It's fantastic for our students to continue building on their skills and to have their creations displayed on the big screen for the very first time.”
