Student, Sahil scoops engineering excellence award

Sahil Thind is one of 11 students across the UK to won the Sir William Siemens Certificate for Excellence in STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths).

“My lecturers hadn't told me about the nomination, so it was a big surprise when I'd found out I'd won,” said 18-year-old Sahil from Aston. “I felt humbled because it's a prestigious award.

“I'm grateful to all my lecturers for their support. The certificate is one way of proving that all my hard work over the last year has paid off.”

The certificate recognises students showing excellence, innovation and dedication during the first year of their sixth form studies. Sahil received £100 prize, with the college receiving £200 towards the cost of their STEM teaching and learning activities.

“Sahil shows a real passion for every aspect of his studies, so we didn't hesitate to nominate him for the Siemens Certificate,” said John Duffy, Department Manager at the College.

“Our courses have a strong focus on preparing students for the world of work and gaining the skills employers are looking for. Sahil has continued to thrive in this environment. His enthusiasm leaves us in no doubt that he'll be a successful engineer in the future.”

Sahil completed the first year of his BTEC Level 3 Engineering course with an overall grade of Distinction Star (the highest grade) and is hoping to study a mechanical engineering degree at university.

“I'm keen to follow a career in design manufacturing,” he added. “It will be competitive, but advanced technology's a growing industry area, so I feel I can do well in this field.”
