Uniformed services students go through emergency situation communications drill

A British Army communications drill that was assigned to uniformed services students at Sutton Coldfield College all went smoothly.

As part of an army careers session, the 37 Signals Unit carried out the exercise with Level 2, 3 and HND students. They were presented with a disaster situation, put into teams and allocated an area of responsibility on a map. Each team had to prioritise their tasks, send situation reports and priority updates. This was done by receiving and logging messages.

Lecturer, Tony Lott said: “The session gave the students an overview of life as a regular and a reservist. Everything the officers talked about related to course modules for Communications and Technology, Planning for Emergency Incidents, Employment, Command and Control and Team Leadership.

“It was a great way for the students to experience the communications practicalities and pressures that disaster situations involve.”

The army also showed students examples of the radio systems they used.
