BMet receives special accolade from RAF

The award recognises the college’s successful track record in providing a high number of excellent quality candidates to the RAF over the last five years.

The college delivers Level 2 and 3 Uniformed Public Services qualifications from its Sutton Coldfield College and Stourbridge College.

Principal and Chief Executive at BMet, Andrew Cleaves said: “The award is testament to the solid learning programme in place for the hundreds of uniformed public services students that complete diplomas with us each year.

“We are delighted to have a growing student alumni based in the RAF. This is living proof of the positive outcomes that are achieved when colleges and employers work side by side to inspire and motivate young people. The RAF has provided some excellent training and development to our students, which has greatly benefited their studies and career aspirations. We are confident that the further initiatives we develop together will continue to bring added success to those interested in representing this industry in the future.”

Over the last few years, BMet students have enjoyed a series of career-focussed opportunities at RAF bases. These include visits to RAF Cranwell where thy have received special access to their University Air Squadron. RAF Cosford has also provided students with valuable insights into careers as Avionic and Airframe technicians.

On top of this, students have helped put new Armed Forces Careers Office (AFCO) employees through their paces by acting as their mock interview subjects. This in turn has improved their awareness of RAF recruitment processes and their understanding of how to work towards meeting specific employment criteria.

The RAF has over 2,000 vacancies each year in a variety of roles including engineering (ICT, aircraft and motor vehicles), catering, logistics, personnel, aircrew, airfield support and medicine to name a few. Many roles have attractive Apprenticeships programmes, which have recently been rated Outstanding by Ofsted. The RAF is keen to promote these career opportunities to a wider community by running a variety of programmes for education providers.
