Job Fair at Matthew Boulton College helps hundreds of job seekers across the region

Over a thousand jobseekers across Birmingham were enlightened to a broad range of job and training opportunities at a busy job fair held at our Matthew Boulton College this month.

The event put on by Birmingham and Solihull Job Centre Plus, was organised by 13 offices across the Birmingham and Solihull district, in conjunction with the Job Skills team at BMet College.

Job seekers from across the west midlands region, were able to speak with leading national employers including National Express, HMRC/Civil Service, Drayton Manor and The Armed Forces. Sigma Finance, who work closely with the college on a successful sector-based-work-academy, also attended.

Malika, a job seeker from Yardley came to the job fair looking for retail, mentoring or counselling work.

She said:

“I came here in the hope of finding a new role that would be interesting to me and which would also be somewhat challenging.

“I am glad to say that I have been able to speak to a number of employers about relevant opportunities and not only have I loved meeting new people, but I have been able to gain new insights into future life options!”

BMet frequently holds informative educational events across its sites to further its community links, help to contribute to the local employment sector and to re-address regional job shortages.

Speaking about the event, Job Skills Advisor Luke Millward, said:

“The job fair was a resounding success. It highlighted the ways in which the college can work collaboratively with external organisations to offer exciting and innovative employment opportunities locally.”

Students at Matthew Boulton College also benefitted from finding out about the various job and career options available to them, including apprenticeship and volunteering routes.

In total over 30 organisations attended the event.

Dave Wood, Wholeship Co-ordinator at HMS Forward (associated with the Navy Reserves) said:

“We’re always happy to come to events like these, as it gives us the opportunity to reach a segment of the community that we wouldn’t otherwise usually reach.

“We’re able to raise awareness of what Navy Reserves can offer and potentially can give candidates access to better life chances.”
