Careers Advice

At BMet, we have a dedicated team of Careers Advisers, who can give you the careers advice, information and support you need to achieve your career goals.

Our Careers Team can help you:

  • Choose the right course to help you achieve your goals
  • Plan your career development and consider the opportunities available including employment, apprenticeships or higher education
  • Write your CV and identify suitable job vacancies
  • Prepare your UCAS form and personal statement for applications to university.

The Careers Team also organise careers fairs, workshops and presentations with guest lecturers from universities and other organisations so you have all the information you need to make an informed choice about your future career.

Careers advice and guidance is impartial and confidential provided by professionally qualified Careers Advisers. You can ’drop in’, or make an appointment to see a Careers Adviser via Student Services at one of our main colleges – Sutton Coldfield College, Matthew Boulton College and James Watt College.

Careers Calendar 2020/2021

University application guidance for Access students with local universities

w/c 21st September 2020

Week long programme of visiting local universities giving group sessions to Access students supported by the Careers team at Matthew Boulton, James Watt and Sutton Coldfield Colleges. (If necessary, will be delivered virtually).
BMet HE Fairs;

·          28th September 2020 at Sutton Coldfield College (Wolverhampton University)

·          29th September 2020 at Matthew Boulton College (BCU)

·          4th October 2020 at James Watt College (Coventry University)

 

Virtual BMet HE Fairs for all BMet students. BMet students can attend fairs at any of the colleges. Providing information on HE courses and answering questions about courses and facilities.
Personal Statement Support, week commencing 12th October 2020 and every week up till the January 15th   2021 UCAS deadline.  UCAS support sessions with Careers team and local universities at Matthew Boulton, Sutton Coldfield, and James Watt Colleges.  Commencing;

·         Monday 12th October 2020 at James Watt College

·         Tuesday 13th October 2020 at Sutton Coldfield College

·         Friday 16th October 2020 at Matthew Boulton College

The Careers Team have arranged for university representatives to visit the colleges and support with writing effective personal statements – up until the 15th January 2021 deadline. (If necessary, will be delivered virtually).

 

Volunteer Fair;

·         Week commencing 22 February

October onwards – groupwork available across the colleges on the topic of volunteering. (Possible virtual volunteering event in February 2021)

UCAS deadline.

UCAS deadline after which applications will be considered late.
University Finance week

8th  – 12th February 2021

 

Visiting universities run sessions each day on the true costs of university and how to apply for student finance to universities at all college sites to all Level 3 tutor groups requesting input.
National Apprenticeship Week

w/c 1st March 2021 tbc

Careers Team offer sessions by request to all tutor groups on local apprenticeships covering all sectors from Apprenticeship week onwards.

Spot light on apprenticeship opportunities for BMet students.  Career Advisors give group sessions to tutor groups to increase their awareness of local apprenticeship vacancies across the region.

Job Search Week 15th – 19th March 2021

 

Cross college week of support for students on CV writing, job hunting and interview techniques, including sessions from employers on what they want in their employees.

 

Personal Statement week 26th –  30th April 2021

Personal statement help week for BMet students in first year level 3 courses with local universities

Full week of visiting universities to all main college sites to advise students on how to write an effective personal statement.  Tutors to book group sessions for their tutorials via college careers advisers.
